Tracking PFAS Bans: What You Need to Know About State-Level Laws

The regulatory landscape for PFAS is changing fast—and expanding across the U.S. with increasing urgency. In fact, with New Mexico recently signing its own PFAS ban into law, there are now 5 states with comprehensive, phased legislation on the books, and more than 200 bills pending across 30+ states.

State-by-State PFAS Ban Timeline

Here's a current snapshot of PFAS bans that have been signed into law, including effective dates and product scope. These laws focus on intentionally added PFAS in a wide range of consumer goods—including categories that directly impact the cleaning industry.

Minnesota

  • January 1, 2025: Bans intentionally added PFAS in 11 product categories (e.g., carpets, cookware, cosmetics, juvenile products, ski wax).
  • 2032: All products with intentionally added PFAS will be banned unless deemed unavoidable.

California

  • January 1, 2027: Bans intentionally added PFAS in cleaning products, cookware, juvenile products, food packaging, and more.
  • 2033: Expands to nearly all product types unless exemptions are granted.

New Mexico

  • 2027: Bans PFAS in cookware, food packaging, and juvenile products.
  • 2028: Extends ban to cosmetics, furniture, carpets, and additional categories.
  • 2032: Full ban on remaining consumer products with intentionally added PFAS, unless exempted.

Maine

  • January 1, 2030: Prohibits sale of products with intentionally added PFAS unless manufacturers disclose use and prove no safer alternatives exist.

Colorado

  • January 1, 2025: Bans PFAS in cosmetics, indoor textile furnishings, and indoor upholstered furniture.
  • Future phases: Additional restrictions anticipated.

Other States to Watch

  • New York: Restrictions on certain PFAS-containing consumer goods began in early 2025.
  • Washington: Earlier bans on food packaging are expanding to cover broader categories.
