8 BATTERIES continued GENERAL WATERING INSTRUCTIONS • Add water, never acid, to cells (distilled water recommended). • DO NOT OVER WATER. • For fully charged standard deep-cycle batteries, add water to the level of 1/8 below bottom of vent well (see diagram A below). • For fully charged Plus Series batteries, add water to the maximum water level indicator (see diagram B below). • If the batteries are discharged, only add water if the plates are exposed. Add just enough water to cover the plates, then charge the batteries. Once fully charged, add water to the proper level indicated above. • After watering, secure vent caps on batteries. The wet battery protection system tells the operator when to water the batteries. This system has a sensor that’s inserted into the machine’s batteries with a light to tell the operator when to fill the batteries. The scrubbing functions will be disabled until watering is completed. See below watering instructions with watering system. WARNING: Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm, and during charging, strong inorganic acid mists containing sulfuric acid are evolved, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer. WATERING THE BATTERIES 1. Use distilled water for filling the batteries. Place the distilled water jug below the top of the batteries to prevent siphoning. Insert the open end of the bulb pump into the jug of distilled water and prime the pump bulb by squeezing it until it is filled with water. 2. Attach the other end of the hose to the quick connect already on the batteries. 3. Squeeze the bulb to pump water into the battery cells. When the bulb becomes firm, all cells are full. NOTE: Battery packs equipped with Fortify™ Wet Battery Protection may use more distilled water than expected to make the light turn off. Compress the bulb pump until is no longer compresses. Not doing so may result in uneven filling and premature battery failure. 4. Immediately disconnect the couplers and replace the cap. NOTE: Do not leave the pump and hose connected to the batteries after filling is complete. DIAGRAM A DIAGRAM B Add water to 0.125" below bottom of the vent well. Add water to the maximum water level indicator. MAINTAINING THE BATTERIES Batteries can attract dust, dirt, and grime. Keeping them clean will help spot signs of trouble when they appear and avoid problems associated with grime. 1. Check that all vent caps are tightly in place. 2. Clean the battery top with a cloth or brush and a solution of baking soda and water. • When cleaning, do not allow any cleaning solution or other foreign matter to get inside the battery. 3. Rinse with water and dry with a clean cloth. 4. Clean battery terminals and the inside of cable clamps using a post and clamp cleaner. • Clean terminals will have a bright metallic shine. 5. Reconnect the clamps to the terminals and thinly coat them with an anti-corrosive spray or silicone gel. 6. Keep the area around batteries clean and dry.
